NEWPORT BEACH - In celebration of the Newport Beach Centennial, the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum (NHNM) is hosting an exhibit titled, "From Dredges to Dreamboats: 100 Years of Nautical History."
The museum has adopted the motto, "Living as You Like It," to recount the rich history of the city of Newport Beach. The exhibit focuses on and celebrates the numerous ways in which water recreation and the film industry have helped to develop and shape the area of Newport Harbor. Entrepreneurs and locals who have contributed to the harbor's development will also be recognized in the exhibit.
Guest curators Joanna Grasso, Julie Perlin, Danielle Susalla, and Cal State Fullerton students from the Museum Studies graduate program all worked together to develop the exhibit.
The NHNM is asking the community to help in the creation of the exhibit by loaning nautical artifacts that people might have in their homes for consideration by the museum.
Anything having to do with Newport Harbor's vast nautical history would be appreciated, including fishing memorabilia, local nautical inventions or even household artifacts. Artifacts do not have to look new, they just have to be nautical and pertain to the city of Newport Beach. In this way, the community is given an opportunity to participate in the centennial celebration and the creation of the exhibit.
Community members are encouraged to donate any artifacts that they can do without until October, when the exhibition ends. People wishing to lend objects to the museum for the exhibit should contact the NHNM at (949) 673-7863 or the Newport Beach Centennial hotline at (949) 718-1856.
The exhibit runs from June 9 to October 15 as one of the many events celebrating the Newport Beach centennial. Centennial celebrations conclude October 8 with a community dance and fireworks presentation titled "100 Years Between the Piers."
