Student Education Programs

A visiting group of school children are fascinated by one of the Museum's models

The Museum has had a formal education program in place since 1997. The Museum maintains and builds excellent relationships with teachers and students in several southern California school districts. When possible, programs are themed around the lives of seafarers and marine scientists and the demonstration of their historical and current skills and technologies.

Throughout all formal learning services is a heavy emphasis on the maritime environment – both generally and that unique to our region’s resources and challenges. Linked to the California State Curriculum, our programs are an excellent resource for co-curricular work in science and history/social studies that carefully match the standards for each grade.

With on-going programs, staff provides assistance to diverse groups to help focus and extend their learning. Through the generosity of a museum member and Pacific Life Foundation, transportation to educational programs is facilitated. This enables under-privileged children to visit the Nautical Museum to participate in the programs available.

For many low income students, their interaction with the museum is a rare exposure to the beach and harbor environment.

The Nautical Museum welcomes any group to experience the value of our resources. Students get to explore practical applications of scientific concepts using an inter-disciplinary approach to develop specific science and math skills. Teamwork and social skills are important elements for each program.

OVER 48,000 STUDENTS HAVE TAKEN PART IN OUR PROGRAMS!
