Sea Monsters Real and Imaginary

Ages: 7-8

Kraken, Orca, Desmostylus and Megalodon are just a few of the monsters of the sea that these adventurers will find out about in this adventure. Creatures wild and wonderful, real and mythical will lay the background for Make-a-Monster Day. The resulting creations are guaranteed to be some of the most whimsical and creative monsters ever to swim the seven seas.

The Secrets of Skeleton Cove: History Comes “Alive” Off the California Coast

Date: July 9 - 12
Ages: 9 - 10

The “cove”, as it is known to locals, has many closely guarded secrets about its history. They can only be unlocked and shared through the sciences of osteology – bones – and archaeology. Explorers arriving for this program are confronted by a diver who announces that his team has been working off the coast and has discovered something “unusual.”

After an initial look at the find, it is brought into the lab where they go to work sorting, categorizing, identifying and analyzing realistic artifacts and specimens (clues and data) related to the time period of one of two historical mystery scenarios. Each scenario is based on authentic California maritime or coastal history. The artifacts help students develop ideas; analyze and interpret data; answer investigative questions; make inferences and communicate their findings. Ultimately, the purpose of the lab is to assemble a plausible story or account of what might have happened to the individual during that time in history.

BONUS WEEK – TWO ADVENTURES FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE!

Shark Chronicles

Date: July 16 - 19
Ages: 10 - 11

Insights into shark natural history, evolution and conservation will be revealed in this adventure. A shark anatomy demonstration will provide insights into the success of this fish group over millions of years. Labs will include the sorting of marine fossil material that will yield teeth from prehistoric California sharks. Students will keep the teeth they find in the matrix. Students will also use scientific “keys” to identify and classify sharks and rays from preserved specimens in an advanced lab experience.

Ready, Flash, Shoot: Seaside Photography

Date: July 16 - 19
Ages: 9 - 11

Starting with photo basics (lighting, composition etc.)to help them shoot memorable pictures such as stills, scenics and close-ups, adventurers will prepare for a seaside photo hunt. Armed with cameras and other equipment they will head out for a series of photo “seefarees” to capture great shots of the Nautical Museum surroundings, be they natural or people-produced. From their shots, they will select their best to exhibit in their own photo show.

“Thar She Blows”: A Whale of a Museum

Date: July 23 - 26
Ages: 11 - 12

An up close and natural adventure that highlights some of the largest creatures on Earth. In this novel hands-on experience, adventurers will develop exhibits and serve as gallery interpreters for the “Newport Whaling Mini Museum.” Up to four museum galleries will be developed: Whale Diversity and Adaptations; Whale Origins; Whaling History and Whale Conservation.

All exhibit materials – fossils, models, specimens and graphics will be furnished.
