Newport - Honolulu :
The 1928 Transpac Race

The Transpacific Yacht Race exhibit focuses on the majestic wooden yachts of yesteryear's 1928 race AND the current 2007 race with ultra-modern, carbon graphite and fiberglass racing yachts. The race in 1928 began in the waters off Balboa, where the racers could go around the channel islands, like Catalina island, any way they chose, with the ultimate goal to beet their five other competitors to Honolulu, Hawaii. This year's race begins off San Pedro and proceeds directly to Catalina's west end, the only mark on the course, and then directly on to the finish line in Honolulu, just beyond the Diamond Head crater. With this year's field of seasoned and high-tech racers, it is almost certain that record times to Hawaii will be set.
