Across the Seas: A History of Navigation
The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum presents Across the Seas: A History of Navigation, a comprehensive multimedia exhibition which will highlight the history and practice of the art of sea navigation. The exhibit will combine modern technology with an historic setting, giving visitors an exciting new way to explore history, from the earliest days that seafarers looked to the skies to guide them, to the latest satellite guided systems.
Visitors will be able to walk under a 12-foot diameter, 9-foot high night sky in a fully equipped planetarium, which will offer them a chance to learn about celestial navigation. Also, both modern and old-fashioned gadgetry for navigation and piloting will be used by visitors to practice nautical charting and other techniques - and to physically experience different navigational instrumentation and understand the improvements to piloting and navigation practices. A recreation of a modern navigation station, a helm station and a grinding station are planned, with all the current navigational technology that might be found on a vessel today.
